Life in Review Exercise

I have an assignment for you. I want you to shine a light over your entire life and look for areas that might be dysfunctional, where you might feel broken and in pain. Why? Because addiction is about pain relief, and when you are in pain, you are in jeopardy of using food to alleviate and numb this pain.

I have five questions for you to answer that may uncover areas of your life that might be dysfunctional or toxic. Everyone has areas of their lives that they are working on, and this is normal. Recognize that these questions point to ideal situations, places we strive to be in our lives:

  1. Are you in a relationship that nurtures your spirit and enhances your life?

  2. Does your career inspire you?

  3. Do you have the necessary boundaries in place to live a healthy, whole life?

  4. Do you care for and nourish your body, mind, and spirit?

  5. Are the thoughts that occupy your mind energizing?

To survive a dysfunctional lifestyle, we must lie to ourselves. What lies are you telling yourself about the broken areas of your life in order to make them bearable?
