In his book The End of Overeating, which I highly recommend, David Kessler explains what is happening within the food industry. He writes, “Right now, the food industry is not only generating billions of dollars by designing hyper-palatable combinations of sugar, fat, and salt, but also creating products that can rewire our brains, driving us to eat more and more of those products.”

Now, you may ask yourself, “Why would the food industry want to do that? Why would they want to make food addictive?” Well, it’s quite simple. They want the greatest share of your wallet. Unfortunately, we live in a world where most people live under the veil of delusion. The veil normalizes our consumption of addictive foods. It convinces us that these foods are “treats” that can actually be good for us in moderation, but this couldn’t be further from the truth for most people. In the end, a trigger food is a drug that hits your bliss point and overwhelms the reward center of your brain, making you want even more. Many people who don’t identify as food addicts and don’t struggle with their weight have still chosen a sugar-free lifestyle. Why? Because eating whole, natural foods brings health, vitality, clear-mindedness, presence, and the list goes on and on.

Trigger foods are almost always factory-made, poor quality, nutrient-free, disease-causing, industrial-made, food-like substances that have robbed me of joy and health.
